Mikhaylo Kotsyubinsky, (born Sept. 5, 1864, Vinnitsya, Ukraine —died April 12, 1913, Chernigiv , Ukraine), is a novelist and short-story writer whose work was one of the highest achievements of Ukrainian modernism. Kotsyubinsky’s philosophical and stylistic evolution from populist realism to impressionism was the result of western European influences and reflected his concern that Ukrainian writing be integrated into the European literary mainstream. His greatest novel , Fata Morgana (1904–10), represented a new approach to the traditional theme of social conflict in a small Ukrainian village.
