We at Michail Gkinis Aoyama share a belief that clothing is a form of artist expression. With our passion for Japanese textiles, we started the Kimono modernisation project with the aim of combining traditional aesthetics of the Kimono with contemporary silhouettes.
With our innovative use of deconstruction, we are able to produce five fresh silhouettes from only one Kimono.
This exemplifies our ethos that fashion isn’t only about consumption but sustainability through recycling. We feel our designs are forward thinking wearable pieces of art for all future generations to enjoy.
The main body of the coat is made from a Japanese high tech fabric blending technique called balansecircular. This unique technique gives the garment a lightweight woven appearance while maintaining strength and comfort. The material also possess a quality that allows us to cut the edges raw without fraying.
The re-imagined Kimono has a relaxed fit with two metal snap buttons and five zips. This multifunctional design allows the wearer freedom to explore the multitude of ways that this piece can be styled. We consider this beautiful item to be genderless and multifunctional.
The heart of the piece is the upcycled vintage Kimono panel which can be attached and detached from the main body, giving this garment a wabi-sabi and asymmetric feel.
This design won the merit award in DFA Hong Kong 2021.
