We at Michail Gkinis Aoyama share a belief that clothing is a form of artist expression. With our passion for Japanese textiles, we started the Kimono modernization project with the aim of combining traditional aesthetics of the Kimono with contemporary silhouettes.
With our innovative use of deconstruction, we are able to produce five fresh silhouettes from only one Kimono.
This exemplifies our ethos that fashion isn’t only about consumption but sustainability through recycling. We feel our designs are forward thinking wearable pieces of art for all future generations to enjoy.
The main body of the cape is made from a Japanese high tech fabric called ultrasuede with a coated technique. This unique technique gives the garment a lightweight woven appearance while maintaining strength and comfort. The material also possess a quality that allows us to cut the edges raw without fraying.
The re-imagined Cape Kimono has a relaxed fit with two metal snap buttons and a zip. This multifunctional design allows the wearer freedom to explore the multitude of ways that this piece can be styled. It can be worn as a light coat or as a wrap. We consider this beautiful item to be genderless and multifunctional.
